Zithromax is generically known as Azithromycin and it is used for the treatment of a wide range of infections caused by bacteria. It is an antibiotic belonging to the class- macrolide. The mechanism of action of zithromax is by preventing the bacterial growth. This medicine doent works for any kind of viral infections like flu and cold. Misuse or unnecessary use of any kind of antibiotic can result in reduced efficiency.

Uses of Zithromax

Zithromax is used for the treatment of several kinds of bacterial infections like skin infection, respiratory infections, sexually transmitted diseases and ear infections. It may also be utilized for some purposes which are not mentioned in this medicinal guide.

Side effects of Zithromax

Ask for immediate medical help if you show any signs of hypersensitive reaction towards zithromax: trouble breathing, swollen tongue, lips, face or throat and hives.

In some cases, zithromax may even be responsible for a serious skin reaction which may prove to be fatal if the infection spreads to other body parts. Attain emergency treatment if you have a worsening or new skin rash along with swollen glands, fever, symptoms of flu, numbness or severe tingling.

Report to physician immediately if you have:

  • Headache with severe dizziness and chest pain, pounding or fast heartbeats, fainting.
  • Severe stomach pain and watery/bloody diarrhea.
  • Liver disorders- pain in upper stomach, nausea, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, itching, jaundice, dark urine.
  • Serious skin reaction – sore throat, fever, burning sensation in eyes, swollen tongue or face, skin pain after a purple or red skin rash which can spread to upper body or face and causes peeling and blistering.

Contact your doctor immediately if a baby takes zithromax and vomits or becomes irritable while nursing or eating.

Older adults may be more prone to have side effects on the cardiac rhythm, which includes a life-threatening and fast heart rate.

Common side effects of zithromax are as follows:

  • Nausea,
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting

Contraindications of Zithromax

Don’t use Zithromax if you are hypersensitive to azithromycin or if:

  • You are hypersensitive to similar medicines like erythromycin, telithromycin or clarithomycin
  • You ever had liver disorders or jaundice due to the intake of zithromax

To ensure that the intake of zithromax is completely safe for you, inform your physician or doctor if you have:

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Liver disorder
  • Kidney disorder
  • Previous history of Long QT syndrome
  • A disorder of cardiac rhythm.

Let your physician know about all the prescription drugs, herbal products and nonprescription medicines you use before surgery.

Pregnancy and Zithromax

Zithromax doesn’t harm an unborn baby but still you must inform your doctor if you are planning to be pregnant or are already pregnant.

It is unknown whether zithromax has the potential to pass into the maternal milk or if it possibly could hurt the fetus. Let your doctor know if you are breast-feeding an infant. Zithromax should not be given to a child below the age of 6 months.
